Watch Jim Carrey actually shave his head on camera for ‘Sonic 3’ scene
When Jim Carrey goes there, he really goes there. The same goes for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, for which the actor of The Mask, Liar Liar, and Ace Venture fame shaved his head on camera as part of a scene for the movie sequel.
Entertainment Weekly‘s exclusive behind-the-scenes clip reveals the moment wherein actor Lee Majdoub, reprising his role of Agent Stone, takes scissors and an electric razor to buzz off Carrey’s locks. As Carrey mentions in the footage between takes, he maintained the longer hair for a year and a half before his big cut.
“We are shooting Sonic 3, and I just cut Jim Carrey’s hair on camera,” Majdoub says in EW’s clip. “It was so much fun, and he wanted me to do it, and he showed me a lot of trust.”
In the story of the film, Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) recruit their archenemy, Dr. Robotnik (Carrey), to help subdue Shadow (Keanu Reeves), a new speedster hedgehog with abilities that Team Sonic can’t quite handle. Robotnik, however, has let himself go quite a bit. So Stone needs to freshen him up with a much-needed trim.
“Yes, the doctor is back!” Carrey declares in the clip.

In addition to Robotnik, Carrey also plays the villain’s grandfather, Prof. Gerald Robotnik, Shadow’s creator in the Sonic video games. “It was such a big ask,” director Jeff Fowler previously told EW, noting how the makeup and costumes for both Robotniks required some serious hours of Carrey sitting in a chair. Had Carrey declined, “I don’t know what we would’ve done,” Fowler added. “I don’t even want to think about this.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premieres in theaters this Dec. 20. Watch the clip above.
