Meghan McCain slams Meghan Markle’s new ‘tone deaf’ Netflix series: ‘Out of touch’

Meghan McCain, the political commentator and former View cohost who once called the British royal system “old, archaic, and deeply irrelevant,” has again slammed former Suits star Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, for launching a new lifestyle TV show while “Americans can’t pay for groceries,” she said.

“I was originally a Meghan Markle supporter, I thought she was cool, stylish and refreshing,” the 40-year-old tweeted Thursday following the release of the first trailer for Markle’s Netflix docuseries With Love, Meghan, which shows the retired actress sharing “personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection,” and highlighting “how easy it can be to create beauty, even in the unexpected,” according to the show’s official synopsis.

“Like the rest of the world my opinion changed when she disrespected the royal family. Now that she wants to be American again instead of British aristocracy what she seems to forget is Americans want real, raw, uncensored,” McCain said, referencing Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, stepping down as working royals and moving to the United States in 2020.

Observing Markle’s interactions in her kitchen, garden, and elsewhere in her home with special guests like A-list Hollywood actress Mindy Kaling, McCain added that “all of this even in the trailer is highly curated, produced and out of touch,” before citing “2 terror attacks in 2 days, major wars raging” and her assessment that “Americans can’t pay for groceries” as reasons for her pointed words toward the project.

“We are a country in rage, uncertainty and intensity right now,” she continued. “This concept is ill advised. I would have told her to do a show helping bring fresh food to food deserts in low income neighborhoods. Do something to help people instead of your ego. This is why the world doesn’t like you, nothing else. Just completely and utterly tone deaf to the moment.”

McCain, who left The View in 2021, has similarly criticized left-leaning politicians as well as Vice President Kamala Harris for being out of touch with Americans’ needs during the 2024 presidential election cycle that ended with another victory for Donald Trump — a sentiment that her View replacement, former Trump staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin, recently echoed on the air at the Hot Topics table.

Despite her assertion that Markle “disrespected the royal family,” McCain, however, has regularly slammed the British monarchy in the past, and even once celebrated Markle and Oprah Winfrey’s contributions to chipping away at the royal system’s veneer.

In a heavily meme’d moment from The View in 2021, McCain said that “monarchies are stupid, the American experiment is the way to go,” before launching into a tirade about Winfrey’s televised interview with Markle on CBS, in which, at the time, they discussed Markle’s exit from royal duties.

“If we have two American women — Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey — who are single-handedly finishing what George Washington and our Revolutionary counterparts did, I’m all for it,” McCain concluded, prompting stunned silence from moderator Whoopi Goldberg, who simply muttered, “okay” in response.

Despite the conservative commentator’s issues with British society, McCain — the daughter of the late Republican politician John McCain — eventually took a gig writing pieces for British Daily Mail news outlet following her departure from The View.

Markle is the latest subject of McCain’s no-holds-barred criticisms, which also recently targeted Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-nominated drama Maestro (“worst movie ever”), Blake Lively’s approach to discussing domestic violence (“I don’t understand why she’s famous”) and her former View colleagues (“crazy old people,” etc.).
