Late ‘Queer Eye’ dog Mr. Piffles cloned by magician owner: ‘We decided to do it again!’

Magician and comedian Piff the Magic Dragon always knew that his dog, Mr. Piffles, was the star of the show, whether on America’s Got Talent, Queer Eye, or the Las Vegas stage. And now the magician — real name: John van der Put — has revealed his latest trick: cloning the beloved Chihuahua who died in November.

Van der Put said in a social media post this week that he had already cloned the pup, and his publicist confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the comedian was being serious. The first clone will be 2 years old in January.

“Cloning Mr Piffles worked so well the first time, we decided to do it again!” he captioned a clip of himself holding up a dog he called “Mr. Piffles 2.” His official name is Fourtune, van der Put said, because he’s their fourth dog and “cost a fortune.”

The video then cuts to the magician and fiancée/on-stage partner Jade Simone picking up two tiny, even younger canines at a Las Vegas airport.

“Hello,” he tells the camera. “We’re here to pick up some dogs.” Very cute dogs, in fact.

The couple, who was featured in the latest season of Queer Eye along with the scene-stealing Mr. Piffles before his death, named their newest additions Fivel and SixPack, both 3-and-a-half months old.

Van der Put brought the original Mr. Piffles out when he competed on America’s Got Talent in 2015. The human and animal star have been headliners at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas since that year, according to his official bio. About Mr. Piffles, it says, “They may be a double act but it’s no secret who the star is.”

When the dog died, AGT ‘s executive producer Sam Donnelly gave a statement to NBC: “Mr. Piffles graced our stage with his unique charm and indifference, embodying one of the greatest canine talents to ever perform on AGT. He was loved by everyone who saw his act, and his partnership with Piff was a truly magical bond that will forever leave a lasting impact on our hearts.”

Both man and dog were part of the Netflix makeover show when it was released Dec. 11. Episode 3, titled “Poof Goes Piff!,” featured van der Put receiving a transformation before being honored with the Magician of the Year Award from the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle. He also ended up proposing to Simone, and the show named a garden after his pup, whose death was not announced in the episode.

“I had a lot of fun on the show,” van der Put told PEOPLE immediately after it aired. “I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like, but I had a really good time with them. I was a little skeptical because how can they improve what already is?” he joked. “And then I realized that they wanted to transform the offstage me. And I was like, ‘Oh, well, that may leave a little to be desired.’ But they came in and just totally made over everything in my life offstage. And Jade, my partner was very, very, very grateful.”

Mr. Piffles died weeks before the episode was set to premiere. On what would have been his 17th birthday, the Flamingo resort dedicated a dog-friendly space to him, which was named, Mr. Piffels’ Magical Playground.

Piff wrote a heartfelt remembrance to his pet while announcing his death.

“For over fifteen years I’ve had the privilege and the pleasure of being upstaged and outshone night after night by that little ball of fluffy indifference,” he wrote. “He came into my life when I had nothing, and set me on the path to a career I could only dream of. In the beginning, I may have rescued him, but in the end, he rescued me.”
