J.B. Smoove wrote ‘SNL’ sketch where Johnny Knoxville tastes urine samples: ‘He’ll do crazy s—‘

If J.B. Smoove ever has the chance to host Saturday Night Live, he’d like to do “a musical monologue” of all the ideas that he unsuccessfully pitched on the sketch show.
“Urine detective,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm actor recounted on an episode of the podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa. “I wrote that for Johnny Knoxville when he was he was gonna be the host. You know Johnny Knoxville? He’ll do crazy crazy s—.”
Indeed, Knoxville is known for injuring himself in bizarre stunts in his Jackass franchise.
“I wrote he was a detective, and he would solve crimes based on your urine sample,” Smoove said. “So he would taste he would taste your urine sample and say ‘Oh, no. This man this man didn’t do this murder, but he did a lot of other s—.'”
(To Smoove’s point, Knoxville said in September that his kids are making him rethink what he does.)
An idea for another host Smoove had that didn’t quite make it to air was one about a couple who fell in love while serving on a military helicopter and now, while raising a family and doing mundane things, would think they heard helicopter blades. But no matter what they were doing, they would run and crouch down as if they were in a helicopter.
Smoove wrote for SNL after losing out on a role in the show’s cast ahead of 2003’s season 29.
“So I did make it to the final three. It was myself, Finesse Mitchell, and Kenan, Kenan Thompson.” We were the last three. We did our NBC test, everything,” Smoove said, adding that it wasn’t one of his best days.
The show went with both Thompson, who’s now the show’s longest-running cast member, and Mitchell, who left after three seasons.
When Smoove pitched a sketch on the series, he performed it, he said. The comedy actor ended up appearing in several uncredited roles on the Emmy-winning series.
“Everybody’d just wait for J.B. to pitch the craziest things in the world,” Smoove said, “and I would really play to the audience of these writers in the room.”

He added that he has many of his ideas from the time written down, and he’d like to do a show with them all.
Beginning in 2007, the last year he earned a writing credit from the late-night series, Smoove appeared on the critically lauded HBO comedy Curb as Larry David’s frequent — and hilarious — companion, Leon.
