Kendrick Lamar surprise-released GNX on November 22, a 12-song record that surprisingly doesn’t include his Drake diss track (and Billboard No. 1 hit) “Not Like Us.” But who does the album diss? You (probably haven’t) guessed it: Father John Misty. Earlier today, Consequence noted the “fun fact” that for years now Lamar and Misty have both released albums within a few months – and sometimes even a few days – of one another, including in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2022, and now today. (Misty’s God’s Favorite Customer and Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack were also both released in 2018). The overlap began with Misty’s Fear Fun and Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city both dropping in 2012. Most recently, Misty released Chloë and the Next 20th Century and Lamar released Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers within a month of each other in spring 2022. Could be a strange coincidence, but who are we kidding? “It’s levels to it, you and I know.”

Joshua Tillman, the man behind the FJM moniker, jokingly addressed Lamar’s repeated efforts to overshadow his output by writing, “Not now I’m furiously scribbling my seeming response to.” One fan responded, “I’m so sorry that you happened to drop on the worst possible day to drop a new album,” to which Tillman replied, “It’s okay only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022.” Later, Tillman seemed to squash any beef that the two are in competition when he posted, “hm how do I tell em my albums don’t chart.” Tillman may just lose in the charts this week, but at least he’s gained a new fan in Cher.
