Now that they’re done folding scarves, Romy and Michele are finally preparing for their next reunion.

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are on the verge of treating fans to another business woman special: the actresses are officially in talks to star in a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel. The followup to the 1997 cult classic hails from 20th Century Studios, with Sorvino and Kudrow to reprise their roles as the titular pair. This time, the stars will also serve as executive producers.

Robin Schiff, scribe of the original film and Emily in Paris showrunner, is back to pen the sequel. Tim Federle, creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and writer-director of Better Nate Than Never, will direct with Laurence Mark (Jerry Maguire, The Greatest Showman) and Barry Kemp (Catch Me if You Can) also producing.

The original film follows the misadventures of Romy and Michele, besties who haven’t accomplished much since their high school days. With their 10 year high school reunion on the horizon, the quirky duo decide to invent fake careers to impress their former classmates. Naturally, hijinks ensue.

After receiving favorable reviews upon release, and scoring a moderate box office, the film continued to expand its audience over the years, attracting more fans with its bonkers tone and off-kilter performances.

“There’s something about Romy and Michele that’s very enduring,” Sorvino previously told EW of the film’s legacy. “I think it’s the nerd friendship, rising above and silliness of it all because we’re really stupid. We think we’re smart, but we’re really dumb and yet we love each other.”

Talk of a potential sequel has circulated for years, spiking after Kudrow and Sorvino appeared together at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards (post-it notes and all). In the subsequent months, both stars told various outlets that something was in the works with Schiff, but nothing was official.

Just last year, fellow Romy and Michele star Alan Cumming confirmed his own interest in returning for the sequel, telling EW, “I think what’s great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters.”

He teased, “I actually know what the story is, and it’s really good. So I’m excited. I’m so excited to go back to it.”

There is no word yet on whether other original Romy and Michele stars — including Janeane Garofalo, Julia Campbell, Camryn Manheim, Elaine Hendrix, and Justin Theroux — will also return.
