Taylor Lautner jokes Bella should have ended up with Jacob in ‘Twilight’

Taylor Lautner proves once again that he’s not going to miss out on a good TikTok trend. The Twilight alum is reviving old Team Edward and Team Jacob rivalries by adding to the backward-camera TikTok trend. 

The new bit involves putting a controversial statement in text and then “accidentally” flipping the phone camera to reveal who the poster is. For his take, Lautner posted footage of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward’s (Robbert Pattinson) wedding scene with text saying, “Honestly, screw Edward. Bella should have ended up with Jacob.” The perspective then switches to Lautner fumbling with the camera, revealing he’s the one reviving Team Jacob. 

For anyone who lived under a rock during the late aughts, Lautner played the vampire Jacob in The Twilight Saga films. He was a potential love interest for Stewart’s character, Bella Swan, who ultimately ended up joining the Cullen vampire coven when she chose Edward as her forever love. As Stephenie Meyer’s books and the movies that bolstered the series into cultural phenomenon status were released, fans were put into Team Jacob and Team Edward camps as the love triangle played out. 

Before Team Edward starts crowing that Jacob never stood a real chance with Bella, it’s obvious the actor was just having fun with the new trend. The actor has proven on multiple occasions that he’s very adept with a TikTok bit, including his “praying for John” video he put up before the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

It’s nice to see that Lautner can joke about the Team Edward and Team Jacob competition now because that wasn’t always the case. He revealed on The Toast podcast in 2023 that the intense fan energy behind the rivalry as the movies were coming out affected him personally.

“Like, we’re a team. We’re both just trying to make the best movies,” Lautner said. “But it was a little bizarre, the competitiveness. There wasn’t a competitiveness between me and Rob, but having that constant reminder definitely had an impact.”
