img080802_02.jpg Stan and Stanton Barrett, father and son, raced together as NASCAR drivers at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on August 2 in the Nationwide Series’ NAPA Auto Parts 200. Stanton drove the #30 Chevrolet while his father Stan drove the Interush #61 Chevrolet at the age of 65 years old. Since the road race in Mexico City, Stan has been training for this moment to return to NASCAR where 1990 was his last race as a NASCAR driver. With the help of his son Stanton, Stan was able to practice in Mexico but ultimately could not drive due to his lack of practice time. But Stan was up to the task in Montreal .

The rain started falling just as the cars began this race. This was a historic race as it was the first ever official NASCAR Nationwide race run in the rain with special rain tires. The only other time they tried this was during practice and qualifying in 1997 at Suzuka Raceway in a NASCAR exhibition race in Japan.

img080802_03.jpg The pole position was held by road course expert Scott Pruett. Stanton started in 21st position and his father Stan in 41st position. After 7 laps around the track, the rain and trash hitting the cars was so strong that Stan decided to retire his car. On the 14th lap, Stanton spun out his own cars as all the cars had trouble with the rain.

The race was won by another road course expert, Ron Fellows and Stanton finished in 25th place after having brake failure. But this event was more than just about the racing. This was big news in NASCAR since a father and son had not raced together since 2002.
