Carl Edwards qualified in second position, then went on to win in Saturday's 200 Mile Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Stanton Barrett racing for the Interush Racing Team, beat seven other racers for the final qualifying position with the 36th fastest time, however due to points was forced to start in the 43rd position. Once the race started, Stanton quickly moved up several positions, when he radioed to his crew chief that his brakes were failing! The crew chief advised Stanton to proceed cautiously and return to the pit as soon as possible. Stanton had to pump the brakes for the next lap to build-up enough pressure to give him the confidence that when he did enter the pit area he would be able to stop. On the next pass he came into the pit area and was able to bring the race car to a stop. The pit crew quickly removed the front wheels and discovered that one of the wheels had badly scored one of the two brake sets. Without the time it would take to replace the brake calipers, Stanton and the crew chief quickly discussed the situation and Stanton agreed to return to the track and test the brakes with the new wheels that were installed in just seconds.

With that Stanton headed back onto the one mile oval track where he was running over 140 mph in the straights and had to rely mainly on shifting to slow the car into the turns. He also had to avoid several crashes and spins by other racers in front of him with limited use of brakes. Despite this very difficult condition Stanton managed to regain his position and at one time had climbed all the way up to 20th position! By the end, the Interush Race Car finished in a very impressive 26th position piloted by Stanton Barrett without the normal use of brakes that are so important to running a strong race.
It was a very exciting afternoon especially for the Interush executives and the Racing Team crew who understood the very difficult and potentially dangerous circumstances.
This finish now places Stanton in 23rd overall position of the 154 NASCAR Nationwide drivers.
The last race of the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide series is Saturday November 15 in Florida.
